Thread: Starter issues

Hey everybody!

So my 95 NAS D1 has not moved in over three weeks! It stopped starting and between attempts to work on it we got 60cm of snow and the temp dropped to -30C, so I have just let it sit....

History,

Truck ran fine, shut it off and it wouldn't start. I was leaving on a trip, had no time so I put a battery charger on because there was just a 'click' in ignition position III.

I left on the trip, leaving the missus to start the truck; this was maybe not the best of plans cause it didn't start! The roadside assistance guy, who recognized my truck, climbed under and bypassed the solenoid and told her that was the issue.

I got home and took the starter off, what a PITA!!, bench tested it. Yep, the solenoid was seized, so I bought a replacement, and fitted it, it worked!!

I put the starter in the truck, and.... Nothing... Checked everything again, nothing.

Now that it has warmed up I was trying to see what the issue is, so i printed off the required pages from the Rave manual and set upon the test procedures.

I get to test 3A, which I do not have battery voltage between pins 30 & 87 but the cause is "B Wire" WTF is the "B wire"? is that Battery, black? WHAT?!

Thanks for the help, I am loosing my mind because of limited time to turn a wrench.

Turns out that the new solenoid had two spade terminal connection, the original only had one! When I tested the starter on the bench, I connected to the correct terminal, but when I put it into the truck I connected it the one that was in the same position as original, which is a neutral post....
Long story short, glad I thought about changing them before I tore the harness apart!
