    Excessive oil usage. Buggar

    Hay all
This is a bit of a weird one,
My 3.9 is using oil. But oddly. I drove most last week and it didn't use any. I drove to the beach and back and in 3 days it used 1 litre. And on that day I could smell burning oil.

So it's going to be 3 things,

    Rings... Buggar

Valve stems ; has anyone changed these without taking heads off, or am I doing it the hard way.

3; I dont know, any suggestions?

I fthe oil has been changed semi regularly, it is unlikely to be rings.
The most common problem is hardened valve stem SEALS.
They can be done without removing heads , by stuffing rope into a cylinder , then lifting the piston until it stops . you should then be able to compress the valve and change the seal.
Never done it myself but hear it's possible.

The simple answer could be of course that if you have driven around town for a couple of months, oil in the sump will be replaced by water which will burn off the first time the engine gets truly warm like on the highway and the oil level will drop quite a bit.

I don't know about the oil smell , but it could be oil that has dripped onto the exhaust again burning off when the exhaust gets really hot.
I hope you have a look under the car every few days to see if it is dropping copious oil, or looking at the rear mudflaps and tailgate for oil spots.

Good grief, it's a Land Rover. Check for major oil leaks, e.g. rocker cover gaskets, oil pressure switch, sump gasket etc. THEN think about valve seals. You'll need to make a lever to depress the valve springs after doing the rope trick, dunno how easy a LR is but I used to do it all the time on P76's.

yep, change oil every 5000kms... OR every 3 months... yep... well at the moment its using soo much by the time it comes around to changing the oil I've already changed it!! BUT I still change it when I change the filter.

No oil leaks anywhere, The sump gasket was leaking by now fixed. Still doing it.

I thought it was maybe the positively pressureing the block and pushing oil out... cos I did notice that the dip stick has oil running up it. about 5-8cm up. Is this normal for a Rover V8?

Ok, I have a look at youtube and see if anyone has done it
