New Discovery 1 owner, hi all!!!

    Hi All!!

I am new owner of 1996 (Dec.) Discovery1 300Tdi. Coming from 10 years of ownership of 60 Series Landcruiser with 2H diesel engine, I have either crossed to the dark or bright side, still to see It was hard to part from my 60 but rust and one very tired engine nailed the coffin. New discovery will have pretty big shoes to fill in!!!

I did bit of research but I mainly took the plunge and purchased this discovery out of the blue so I'll have a few questions I'm sure since I'm quite a novice to "british engineering".
To give you an example, one of the questions was "What the hell is that drum on the driveshaft?".....oh a handbrake....righto.....

In return I offer general knowledge on car electrics, diesel engine and 60 series expertise (I'm sure last one won't be utilised much )

Engine seems to be in good nick for 350000, however, there is amount of backlash somewhere (everywhere), 4th gear synchro is dying it seems, and there is very scary sound in 2nd gear decelerating.

I'll start off with a few questions:

    - 31 inch tyres with standard suspension, possible?
    - diesel / petrol diffs ratio / gearbox, same or different?
    - how difficult is it to install cruise control and remote locking?

    That will do for now

    All the best!!!

Welcome to the darker side of the light side

There is a fantastic amount of information in the D1 section, about 10 years worth of postings. Have a search around the forum (use the Google search function right at the bottom of the screen for preference), and then see which of your questions are still unanswered.

Welcome aboard, i answer some of your Q's.

31's are doable but all depends on rim width and offset, stock rims with 245/70 or 245/75 are a good match and only require a light trim to the rear of the rear guard opening. Trim is referred to as a "camel cut ".

TDI/Petrol use all the same ratio's in all the gear boxes, transfer and diffs.
I have an aftermarket cruise and it works well albeit a basic system.
Remote locking should only require the correct fob .

Welcome to the D1 part of the forum. I hope you enjoy your time with the D1 and as I have just systematically work through any issues you come up against. I keep mine stock as it seems to be a bit easier to maintain.
Yes as stated above there will be a bit of guard trimming for the larger tires. There are a couple of aftermarket cruise controls available, a great one is from USA but runs at approx. $ 350.

Welcome, I too have up/downgraded from an old 2H 60 series which swore was the greatest 4x4 ever made. After an accident that crushed my foot the heavy clutch was to much, the roof was riddled with cancerous rust and the ever growing family insisted on something more comfy. With young kids I needed seven seats and safety but still a capable offroader so a Disco it is (97 v8i) I run 245/75/16 M/T's under a big 2" ironman lift and they often catch on the bumpers skirt but hope to solve this by fitting a winch bar so maybe you will need some lift and with a good quality workshop manual by your side ratios and your cruise control install will be relatively simple.
