More over heating
Hi all
I had a overheat and boil over yesterday on my 96 V8 disco I managed to limp to my brothers place stopping regularly, on one of the stops with the engine off there was an energetic boiling in the expansion tank that went away with the engine running, with the engine off the boiling stopped like it had been switched off after 10-15min. I had the radiator, water pump, thermostat and vicious coupling replaced 6 weeks ago so I am suspecting the head gaskets as there is a slight weep from the front of the L/H bank. It seems to be idling fine but will over heat after about 10-20mins when moving, I don't have symptions like bubbles in the expansion tank or milky oil.
Cheers

Are your electric fans coming on when the engine is hot?

A head gasket may be blown near an exhaust port so you may not get the oily or milky symptons. Have you checked the ignition timing?

Replaced the dizzy and did a bee utey conversion with a MEC717 about 12 months ago. I've been checking the timing every 3 months since then and all good.

Hi Boony,
Whip the thermostat out and run the disco without the thermostat for about 20 mins. It sounds stupid as you have recently replaced it but I've had dud newbie. If she doesn't overheat, this was your prob. Otherwise.... Are you sure you have no air in the coolant system? Did you run it with the heater on full warm setting when filling?

Sorry! Forgot to add, when it's hot (energetic boiling in expansion) carefully placed your hand (preferably someone else's haha) on the top hose to check if this is also hot. If it's not, the thermostat is not opening

Its probably not boiling but just pushing combustion gases from the top of the rad into the expansion tank. Likely as not a cracked block and a slipped liner, although head gaskets are a possibility. I've had some success with plumbing the 8mm return hose to a new fitting drilled and tapped into the top of the expansion tank and teeing to the radiator connection. This way any combustion gases generated are passed to the vapour space of the expansion tank and vented under pressure without blowing out a load of coolant.
