Hi, I was about to buy my first Discovery 1998 as I had some travellers telling me how great the car is especially the diesel model is with very good fuel economy, but after finding a 1998 Turbo Diesel, 4 speed Auto, 270,000 klms all I hear now is that I am asking for trouble with firstly buying that years Discovery, the turbo will give me no end of grief and the diesel motors aint much chop after 200,000 klms, so now I am having 2nd toughts about proceeding with purchasing a turbo diesel, any advice or thoughts on this would be welcomed, thanks in advance

Biased opinion im guessing. Ive got 270000 pretty well trouble free km from mine. Engine + turbo going strong. Auto just starting to make some noises but who can blame it.
200000 is just run in for the TDI.

Compared to what? Nissan's 3 litre diesels that needed rebuild after 20k?
I dont think its the matter of make or model that much. Its how they buid these engines nowdays. Producing more power with slimmer construction.
Take toyota 2h engine. It will run forever. Simply because it doesn'produce enough power to break anything in it's construction!
Its a whole different philosphy in building anything 90s onwards!

Justinc, Come to think of it I was at Macrossan in my MB100D camping and they were grey nomads with Nissans and a Prado or Pajero, never dawned on me they might never have ever owned one, feeling silly now, reason I was after a 4wd was to be able to go the extra distance out bush up to Cooktown etc and was thinking of Discovery diesel as being the most suitable vechicle to use, now I found two the 1998 model and a 2002 model, but was very concerned with the horror comments
Rest assured a GOOD example with regular servicing will be a great car. SOME 1998/99 engines had delaminating big end shell issues, this can be checked and rectified early on quite cheaply. And don't ask it to tow 3000kg caravans, either...:O

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
2002 will be a D2 and likely not to have a center diff lock. The engine on a 2002 is a Td5, better performance that the 300Tdi you are going to get in the 1998 model D1. The 300 Tdi although not as powerful as the Td5 will be simpler to work on and probably cheaper to repair if you do have to work on it. If you know one end of the screwdriver from the other and not scared of getting under the vehicle then go the 300Tdi, pull the sump and check the big end bearings. The turbo will be fine and if not you can get a kit for it. The auto is the one thing that can be an issue on high mileage models, if the gear changes are smooth, it has life left in it some going into the 400ks without an overhaul. Good servicing, not overheating them helps with the longivity of the auto.
If 300Tdi, replace the coolant expansion tank and put in a low coolant alarm. Check for when the timing belt was last done if not get it changed. That should take care of most of the issues than can result on a 300 Tdi.
My 98 TDI auto has 320K on the clock and still pulls like a 14yo boy, no major issues and no show stoppers. If you are on a budget then go a TDI , i wouldnt buy a cheap TD5 as they can have expensive malfunctions.

300TDi's are near indestructible! as long as the servicing is kept up to date they'll do half a million, no worries!
Dad has one in a 130 that's done over 400,000km and it keeps up with my disco easy...
Sounds like you've been listening to toothless Toyota/Nissan owners.![]()
