And the noise is definitely coming from the engine bay. My first guess was dying turbo but now I'm thinking exhaust manifold gasket.
Any guesses?
Guys,
My 300tdi auto has developed a weird issue.
Under load, especially going up hills, there is a noise in conjunction with the regular whistle of the turbo that sounds like a plague of crickets. Can't be replicated at idle.
The noise gets worse as the revs climb but diappears as soon as I lift the throttle.
Hoses seem ok, though soft. Waste gate hoses are attached. Gurbo vanes and shaft feels ok.
Oil leaking down the exhaust side of the block.
285,000 km, head gasket never been done, timing belt due at 300,000.
Thanks all.
Tom.

Has the heat shield which normally bolts to the intake manifold at cyl 3,4 protecting the turbo intake duct, fallen down it maybe sitting between the firewall and bellhousing, its a tin shield. It had me scratching my head for a while.
Yes it has. It was stuck back there but wasn't causing the noise. Cheers.
If its only under load, check the uni joints - make sure they are unloaded. A dry joint can make a chirping noise - even after greasing I had one that was bone dry from a blockage, made a hell of a racket.
Another culprit can be the serpentine tensioner - not the bearing necessarily, but between the front part that is sprung against the back part - there is a nylon or rubber separator, when it gets worn away there is metal on metal contact that chirps a bit.
Thanks. I'll check them out but sounds most definitely like exhaust or intake

Also check the injector clamp stud, when i first got my disco it had a noise that steadily got worse. Got to the local supermarket after getting sick of the racket and nipped up number 3 injector clamp and the noise went away.

Had a similar thing on my v8, it was a (read 1) loose manifold bolt, about 3/4 of a turn latter all noise was gone.
Oil leaking down the exhaust side of the block will be the cause = Blown manifold gasket easy cheap fix
It will only make the noise under boost and load![]()
