    Transmission cooler mounting

    I just bought my first 4x4 after owning nothing but commodores. It's a 95 auto v8. I don't intend on 'hardcore' 4x4ing really, just for camping and abit of fun. I want to install a tranny cooler to start off with. Now because it's a 4x4 I can't mount it for max air flow like my previous commodores. This is where I came up with an idea but not sure how well it would go or if it will be legal.
    My bull bar is of the typical type with the bumper section like c-channel. I was planing to mount the cooler in the bull bar and cut slits in the bull bar for airflow. This would provide maximal air flow and protection.
    What are your thoughts on this?

    Hi, congrats on getting the disco, if you enjoy tinkering with your cars you will be right at home with her.

    I own a 94 so I'm not 100% sure of the 95 but I reckon I'm on the right track. you have a 3.9V8 with a ZF4HP22 auto behind it - as it is a 22 and not the 24 it most likely has what is commonly called a bottle brush cooler on it which sits behind the grill in front of the AC condenser. The most common mod is fitting the cooler off of the ZF4HP24 which looks like what you would be used to seeing on a commodore - undoubtedly there are other coolers which will do the job and quite possibly better.

    Bottom line the biggest killer of any auto but particularly the ZF22 is over heating it as you can get all the bits from a landy wreckers to do the mod the ZF24 cooler would be the easiest option.

    This cooler comes from the P38 range rover or I believe the newer discos with the 4lt motor

    the 4L ones are different,,
    they might fit,,
    anyone tried?

    I have the 4L cooler (pic right) mounted in front of my radiator/intercooler on my 94 300TDi Disco.
    I used 10mm (ID) hydraulic hose (2250psi), used brass spud fittings (barbed type) to connect to original existing fittings and with great effort and hot water slipped the other ends over cooler inlet/outlet pipes and clamped with two hose clamps each.
    I fitted one clamp after the ridge on the pipe and one on the other (outer) side and tie wired them together. Been there over a year now , no leaks, no overheating oil, either, I will try and post up some pics if I can find them, Regards Frank.

    Thanks for all the replys, is it true that they run 200psi through the cooler lines? Seems awfully high to me, how ever this set up is all new to me.
    I suppose its a not to fitting it in the bull bar itself? All my cars had thermos, where this is a clutch, so it should effect it too much by putting another cooler infront of the rad? I ask because with thermo ones, i like to get as much air into the rad and the tanny cooler is off else where.
    Having a look at the rad too, a second set of lines go to the other side, is this oil cooling? If so, id like to put that in a separate cooler too.
