300tdi - oil return above pick up?

hi all, had a little tinker with the disco the other day and resealed the sump.

ive noticed on start up that the oil light is staying on for a couple of seconds, which it hadnt done previously, and this got me thinking.

i had to remove the pick up* and return** at the bottom of the motor so i could shimmy the sump out over the diff/front end steering assembly.

when i put them back on, i put on the return first, and then the pick up.
this lead to the return pipe sitting above the pick up.
as it was hot, and i was in a rush i just left it as is and didnt think too much of it untill now....

is that the right way around, or should the return be sitting below the pick up?

ive had a bit of a google, but cant really find an image of a 300tdi with the sump off. does any one have an image of this?

or can anyone confirm this is the right or wrong way?
i really dont want to pull the sump off to rearrange if it is in fact the right way around. especially as it is still hot..

thanks in advance for your help guys, appreciate it a lot!

ps, my limited mechanical knowledge has lead me to calling the pick up* the one with the vented large round base [held in by two 8mm bolts, and one 10mm], and the return** the 10mm bent tube [held in by two 10mm bolts]. hope that makes sense.

Did you fit a New O-Ring and gasket to pickup and drain pipes, if not this maybe the cause of your problem, I can't see how you could put the pipes on wrong, unless you bent one to make them fit, the drain pipe sits over the top of the pickup pipe, i.e. the drain pipe looking from underneath is lower (towards the base of the sump) than the pickup pipe, Regards Frank.

Looking at this image I can't see how you could get the pickup and return the wrong way around. As Tank mentioned there is an O-Ring and gasket that need to go back on.

    thanks for the video/confirmation lads.
from memory all is good under there, just thought that the return above the pick up may be having an effect on pressure on start up (ie, not returning fast enough when oil is cold).

i didnt replace the oring as it still had a bit of pressure (interference feel fit) on refit, and did not notice a gasket on the return pipe.

a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing, but only way to learn i guess.

out of curiosity how detrimental would not running the oil return gasket be??

The O ring needs to be replaced, if you are sucking air at this point then this will cause the problems you are having, Regards Frank.
