31's or 32's? 15inch or 16inch, what offset etc etc

tried to hijack another thread with little luck.
and as youve probably guessed by all my questions, im new to the wonderful world of LR.
anyhow im wanting to put a more aggressive tyre on the car, in a larger size to increase diff clearance. i wouldnt mind changing the rims (increase offset) to loose the roller skate look, but dont want to foul the guards when flexing.

i like the idea of 15inch rims, as tyres are a little cheaper and they bag out a bit better. i like the idea of 32's as they give better clearance.
will 32's be forgiving on stock 300tdi gearing? (mechanically and an acceptable loss of acceleration? on a 1996 D1, so upgraded splines/gbox yes?)

what size and offset 15" steely would you suggest to fit some 32x11.5's with minimal guard work (ie, is it possible to do this with only a camel cut and no flares?)

alternatively should i just suck it up and put some 265/75/16's on my stock wheels and just do a camel cut?

if you could post a pic with your brand of lift, tyres, rims, offset and any scrubbing this could possibly become a pretty useful thread for other D1 n00bs like myself

    thanks all!

    anyone?
ill keep it simple as ive dribbled a lot of nonsense up there

    1) what size/offset rim would i need to fit a 32x11.5 R15 tyre to a D1?

    2) can i get away with only a camel cut, or will i need additional guard mods?

    3) will 32's make a 300tdi unbearably slow?

    4) will 32's break driveline easily?

    thanks team

    15x8 -25mm would be ideal.

    Nope, you will need flares

    3) will 32's make a 300tdi unbearably slow?

not on my auto, it actually has better acceleration

    4) will 32's break driveline easily?

depends how you drive, i have never broken any driveline parts
    thanks team

Bagging out 15" tyres will reduce your diff clearance. Isn't that the opposite of your main goal?

I think 215/85R16 is a great size. I got duratracs that size for my RRC, they are actually wider than 225/75R16 BFG A/T so they protect the rims well and give a good footprint. But don't rub anywhere but the radius arms on full lock on stock rims (need to adjust the stops).
Size is a hair under 32".

Most 15" tyres are wider, so you're straight into cutting to make them fit and not rub.

but a bagged out 32 will still provide better clearance than a bagged out stock size tyre.

do you have any pics of your bus on the 215/85R16s??

alternatively i can get some 265/75R16s at a pretty fair price, will they need anything besides a camel cut to fir on stock rims??

    thanks again all!

I run 265/75R16 muddies on stock rims (16x7" +33 offset). Was running 31x10.5R15 muddies on 15x7" +19 offset rims before that.

The front 265s rub on the flat leading edge of the side sills (plastic). Not by much, and one trip along the Border Track sorted that out largely... Steering stops will need to be adjusted, of course.

The rear 265s would rub had I not effectively Camel-cutted. They also rub on the leading edge of the guards (near the sill), but mine is a 3-door and the clearance here is a lot less than on a 5-door. The rears also hit the mudflap brackets near full articulation. Extended bump stops seem to have sorted that out.

I don't reckon that there's any way that 32x11.5s would go under standard guards irrespective of wheel offset. You'd need to do a fair bit of cutting. I think flares would be required, really.

I have 32" big horns on -25 15" rims with a 2" terrafirma lift i didn't like the look of flares so i trimmed the gaurds a small amount the whole way around the guards, flexed it up at home best we could every thing cleared. Took it out 4x4ing out at amamoore and bent 2 of my guards :/ when you trim your guard you lose a lot of strength with out flairs. In short if you want to fit 32s you need flairs or trim plenty of guard and run the risk of cops pulling you up i havent been and its my daily.

    Sorry I missed this.

I don't have any flexed up pics as I only had them on over last winter.

    Just out of the slop.

Air suspension on full drop on level ground.
