ABS AIR GAP SENSOR THINGY???
A place that shall not be named fitted a new abs sensor on my97 v8i. So I've now entrusted the help of "real" LR experts. MR AUTOS have politely informed me that my ABS warning is an air gap from this alleged new sensor. MR have suggested that with my apparent mechanicing skills I can fix it by tapping it down with a screw driver.
a. Has anyone done this?
b. Does anyone know of a tutorial thread that might guide me through it?
MR AUTOS told me it would be a costly amount for an easy fix but cannot reset my faults until this is rectified, very expensive mob to go through but this seems to be a reasonable request after a $40 diagnostic.

I have done it a few times with no ill effect, just find where sensor goes into hub and give it a couple of gentle taps. im pretty sure if you go to far it will push out slightly once wheel is rotated. I have used this method. I also have had success with resetting the warning light by, removing battery lead and leaving ignition switched on for about 1 hour. It worked for me. As always happy for someone to shoot my advice down. Baz

You can read the fault yourself by bridging the diagnostic plug under the dash. Google will tell you which pins and also what the blink codes are. Disconnecting your jumper while the code is blinking will clear that code. I have done this but cannot remember the actual link- it's on another computer sorry

I'm satisfied it is an air gap, if I'm concious I can get down the road without the warning light but a pothole, speed bump or native will trigger it. The haynes manual seems a bit extreme, and is hard to understand as it wants to replace the whole thing. It looks like I should be able to remove the two bolts on top of the hub and viola! But the manual makes it seem like I have to tear the lot apart and says to pull the axle out a half inch WTF?

ABS sensor
I have a 95 ABS d1, and was having a fair amount of troubles with abs codes
1. First thing to know is that the ABS sensor is not bolted in, but slides in a tube and is snuggly held in position without bolt or spring. When needed, I tap the sensor down, with a light hammer and a piece of wood (gently, tapitty tapitty ) and you can feel it slide down and touch the teeth (dont crush the exit wire and be gentle). When you rotate the hub, it will then "bump gap" itself.
2. Don't undo those two bolts either side of the the abs sensor. I think you're referring to the two upper swivel pin bolts, which need to be precisely torqued down. The only reason to undo them at present would be to set your swivel pin preload (by doing the shims)
3. The best thing i did to get rid of my code problems (air gaps etc left or right abs sensors via blink codes and a paper clip) was to set the swivel pin preload on the front. Its a shuffling around of the shim pack, and thus the right resistance to moving the hub. Improved the steering response of my D1 sooo much, and completely got rid of my ABS code issues. To do your preload, you'll need a torque wrench, oil/one shot grease for hubs (if theyre oil filled and you spill), and I used a digital baggage scale to adjust the preload.
Best of luck
