Looking for my cruise control switch harness

I have a 97 300TDI and have read on numerous forums that the cruise control wiring harness is built into all vehicles, it is just a matter of fitting the bits required and plugging them in.

I have shoppe fall over the world and am now ready to start the install.

I am up to plugging the harness into the dash mounted on/off cruise control switch and are now looking for the plug.

I know that the plug is blue with 4 wires, red, white, black and green/yellow. I have read that it is taped up on top of the heater controls on non cruise control vehicles and that the neighbours kids will learn new swear words as I attempt to find it.

I have pulled the stereo out, the panel with vents and heater controls, the panel under the steering wheel, the panel under the dash board and have spent the last few weeks searching and educating the neighbours kids.

The neighbours now hold on to their children and cross the road when they see me but I am no closer to finding the plug.

If anyone has any idea, or has a Discovery 1 (petrol or diesel) with cruise control and can see which direction the wiring is coming from, it would be most appreciated. I may even return the straight jacket I purchased for myself from fleabay.

    Hi Kubcat

You are just out of luck I had most of my dash out of my 97 V8 about a month ago I could have traced it for you then. I pulled the switch panel out and took a couple of pics, I'm not sure that they will help though. You may find that the plug could be taped to the main loom near the fire wall.

I had another quick look and my disco is a 98 V8 auto but that shouldnt make much of a difference. The wires from the cruise switch are black, green/yellow, brown/red and white/yellow. The four wires go from the cruise switch into the loom, a run of around 10-15 cm, that is behind the hinged panel under the steering wheel. The white/yellow goes into a red connector, Ive also seen it come out of the steering column loom from the rotary. If you trace the white/yellow you should find all the connectors for the cruise control, the switch and ECU

Thank you very much, I just need to sneak out of the house before it gets too dark without the missus figuring it out. Apparently my Disco gets more attention than her and it's a bad thing.

I will let you know how I go.

    Very clear photos, great work.

Boony73, I owe you a very cold beverage of your choice.

It wasn't very hard to find at all once I followed your photos.

I don't know what we ever did before forums.

    Thank you very much.

Australian delivered 300Tdi's do NOT have the ability to fit Cruise Control as a plug & play option.
We are missing a couple of major items, lets mention the ECU that controls it & for this we need a fly-by-wire throttle pedal. We do not get this as it is cable operated.
Been down this path many years ago...too hard....too costly.

It is the basically the same set up as a V8 no fly-by-wire just old school cable.

Johnd posted on this forum in the projects and tutorials section a long while ago about retrofitting cruise control to a 300tdi. He has a step by step guide.

The UK 300tdi's were mostly fly by wire (EDC) for their tighter emissions. Ours in Australia are the old fashioned cable operated style so we need to get a little creative with the throttle attachment but all the wiring, plugs and sockets are there. Most parts are the same as the V8.

The bits on the end of wiring harness need to be sourced and the attachment to the injection pump needs to fabricated or sourced.
