I tried the knobs. Are they pull off? Pry off? Twist off? Curse off?

they pull off
It's a Disco... Why did you even remove the temp controls?
Have you got a Rave cd ?
There should be all the instructions on there for replacing the stereo. I printed them out and let my 14 year old son do the job. I don't recall it involving the heater controls.

Unless you are redesigning your dash for double din you didn't need to go that far. A bit of wire down the sides of the radio and it pops out. Wire plug and new one in. Max 1 hr job.

Yeah ive got rave and haynes. I had a look for it but didnt find any info. After 15 years in the cairns sun the plastic was very brittle. I tried the hooks but the dash practically exploded leaving me riddled with shrapnel as soon as they came in contact. It did have a crack already anyway. The screw behind the coin tray I would never have got out anyway.

Just for when you reassemble, use small washers behind the screws that hold the plastic bits in. It cuts down the stress on the plastic behind the screw as its tightening. Without the washer the screw grabs the plastic and is a factor behind all the cracking around the screws we are all plagued with. With washers you can get them a bit tighter, helps stop the rattles.
I get the distinct impression you still tried pulling the dash apart, not pulling just the head unit out.
The head unit can be removed without physically touching the dash, so I'm struggling to understand how you broke the dash.
What exactly did you try to do first?
