    LT230 freeplay

    Took apart my xfer box today to try to cure the freeplay it has. Found that teeth are worn on both high and low gears where they engage the selector ring. Or at least i think they are worn or designed like that? but that,s where freeplay is coming from! Did anyone replace these gears to get rid of the freeplay? Everything else inside is looking good!

    Also does anyone know why is there so much freeplay on the dog clutch for diff lock? I can see that it was designed like that.

    Never seen or driven a landy with an LT230 that doesnt have any backlash, just the way they are.

    Yep, all normal there. They aren't the most refined TC, but they are strong and reliable. If you wanted something smoother, you could stick a Borg Warner TC in, but then you loose the strong and reliable bit...

    Of course if its excessive then you can adjust some of it out but they will always have a little.

    That's why I took it apart. But there is no adjustments there unfortunatelly

    Digging a bit deeper.

    The thrust washers inside the center diff are probably needing replacement.

    There is adjustment on the intermediate shaft as well.

    How is the output shaft from the gearbox, is that spline in good nick?

    Is the flange going to the front diff tight?

    All tight,

    Intermediate shaft, no play, centre diff, no play. Just that high gear / selector ring meeting point. That's where all freeplay is. And as mentioned, "built in" freeplay on diff lock.

    I had the idea of using wave washers to help smooth out the backlash without shimming it up too tight ?
