Thread: Fitting 40l Engel Fridge Rear D1

WOW, that really is a tight squeeze. Is that the current Engel 40l? Just wondering if the dimensions are the same (H 508 W 648 D 364 mm)?


How far up the seat does it go? Just wondering if it actually reaches the back of the headrests i.e. the vertical part rather than the angled part. If so I guess it doesn't mind how high it is mounted

40L Engel fits in the back of mine with the grab bar removed from the rear door.....just.

Why are all the pullouts lengthwise. Surely someone could come up with a lateral slide??? When you think about it, lifting the lid would be easier from right to left than front to back, surely???

Waeco 40 lt fits with by removing 1 handle. New ones have shorter handles so might be better. Mines a 2007 model Waeco

When I had the D1 I had the MT45F in there with both handles fitted.

On the cargo barrier I pushed the fridge all the way in and from inside the passenger area looked at which parts of the mesh would need removal.

A few minutes with a Dremel and the handle slid into place and all was good

I have set of rear drawers with my 40l Waeco or Engel sitting on top of the drawers they fit longways. The drawers mean that the fridges sit higher and you get precious MMs because of the window recess.

I only have a half cargo barrier so I think I have a bit more room because of that. However, the bottom of the barrier could still foul the fridge, depending on how high it comes.
I'm going to take measurements and check out some fridges at the Brisbane 4WD show at the RNA this weekend to see what might work best.
I'm thinking something around 36 litres might be the go. I don't want it to be too big as we already have a 40 litre Engel in the camper trailer, so will probably use the one in the vehicle mainly as a freezer when towing the trailer, or as a fridge without the trailer.

I got the 40l to fit without cutting the cargo barrier. Removed the front handle and put a web belt on the front. I mand my own fixings for the barrier and put it hard against the seats. The fridge slide I also made and had to recess the fridge legs into the ply. It was really tight but worth it and I didn't need to tie the fridge down because it wouldn't move with the door closed. I did end up putting a hole in the door trim on a rough trip unfortunately.
