Help! Lost all power steering and revs. V8

Hello all, i turned a left corner on the way home today and felt as if something snapped.

Lost power steering and the RPM tacho, battery light came on.

Car didn't stall and still ran, limped about 1km home.

    Timing belt?

God knows, someones help would be great!

    Cheers

    5 minutes, maybe less.

And no timing belt on a V8, it has a chain.

    Thank the lord.

I did find out it is a chain not a belt, sorry for my ignorance. 300tdi is a belt?

Thought it was the end of my easter trip but alas I should be still going provided I find some time to get the job done.

    Thanks guys

Could have been a costly mistake not checking it before driving off, belt could have wrapped around something and caused damage.

Im replacing the fan belt tomorrow but just found it is losing coolant - probably from when the belt came off as loanrangie has said.

It seems to be leaking just under the alternator but I can't see if there is a split hose or what is leaking.

Is the water pump down there behind the fan?

I just can't figure out where it is leaking from - but it is leaking pretty heavily

Yes, the pump is behind the fan.

Can you wiggle the fan (up/down = side to side) ?
If so, I'd say the water pump bearings are worn causing your leak. It might explain why your belt came off but I doubt a worn water pump would cause that unless it was really bad.

I'll have a mechanic look at it tomorrow because I can't see a thing at the moment.

I just hope it isn't too hard to find

Yep it was the water pump. The bearings were shot which gave the fan a lot of movement and probably wore away at the belt.

The water pump had just started to mark the timing cover too

Replacing it all tomorrow and hopefully still be able to go away for Easter
