Fast paced rattle coming from 300tdi

    Hi All,

Trying to diagnose a fast paced rattle coming from the engine bay of my 300tdi.

I think I've narrowed it down to the vacuum pump but thought I'd ask her to see if anyone come across it before?

Video link herE: Discovery 300tdi odd noise identification - YouTube

    Thanks,
    Rez

Yes, you'll find your brakes require more pedal pressure as the vacuum pump gets worse. Wabco is the brand if you're replacing. If you're feeling handy, there's this:

Someone else may come along with real wisdom. Good luck with it all.

You may find the booster needs replacing too.
The booster can't hold the vacuum the pump is producing so pump works harder and wears out. It's a vicious circle.
Lots of info on here, well worth doing a search or 2.
    Cheers

    Hi guys,

I overhauled the Vacuum pump a few months back as it was leaking oil. Haven't noticed any deterioration in brakes since then or even now.

Power seems to be ok at high load but lacks when towing but isn't that a 300tdi characteristic?
What are you thinking could be the issue Blknight.aus?

    Thanks

lack of fuel pressure in the delivery to the IP.

it could also be a sticking rocker.

if it goes away on over run its likely to be related to the IP

If its only while the vehicle is in motion check the propshafts.

    Hi Dave,

It happens at idle like in video and same noise occasionally when driving. Definitely engine bay related.
Sounds like when the PCV vent on my Escort years ago and the internal valve would just rattle around.

    Thanks

confirm its the noise at about 4.5 seconds for 2-3 seconds and then again at about 13 seconds for the same time frame.

Hi Dave, yes those time points are the noise I'm talking about.

    Thanks
