Cleaned the radiator in and out. Was pretty dirty externally. Didnt make much of a difference. No gas in coolant, fluid stayed blue. No water in oil. No power loss. No overheat at idle.
Thermostat, viscous and water pump next.
Any other tips?

from my experience, i have had a fair bit to do with the 300tdi and head gaskets blowing / heating issues,
from your last post saying it takes about 5 mins to start rising, sounds like a blown head gasket (they seem to blow between the number 2 / 3 cyclinder and the water chamber pressureing the chamber,
try running no radiator cap (or leave it on very loose and put some tape over it so it doesnt come off (so the system wont presurise ) and see if it still heaps up and pushes all the fluid out.
also when the a/c is on it creates alot more temperature and blocks the cooling to the radiator by needed the cool air to cool the heat in the a/c..
check to make sure the thermos are working when the a/c is on (there should be 2 approx 10" ones infont of the raidiators which are switched via relays when the a/c is on..
i found mine werent working.
Viscous worked almost took my hand off. The thermo fans were not working with the car warmed up to operating temp and just driven with the a/c on max. Hopefully this is it...
would they make thay much of a difference by not working?

IME they bring the temp down quickly once they turn on. But on mine at this time of year they only come on when towing.Quote:

the a/c and the fans not working will create alot more heat..
i removed my grill from infront which helped with cooling until i replaced the thermo fans
Thanks "LOOK" with those fans not working on your car did it overheat when u pushed it hard?
Not alot of information floating around in the Haynes or LR workshop manual about the thermo fans. I checked fuse and that was fine.
One of the brass plugs on the thermostat housing switches the fans on. What does the other brass plug do?

There is a relay for the thermo fan behind the glove box. Just unlatch the glove box and let it drop down and you should see it. I connected a switch to ground (think it was the thinner brown wire) and now I can switch the fans on and off without the aircon on. There are a few similar yellow relays back there so try turning the aircon on and off while listening for a click (assuming the relay is not stuffed).
In my experience though I don't think they make a great deal of difference to engine temp and the digital temp gauge I fitted does not seem to budge when I turn them on. I do turn them on though when going up steep hills on the understanding that every bit helps.
