Hi, back in ye olden days, we used to regularly spray the under sides with old Diesel engine oil mixed with diesel, and to used to work a treat..just a dirty pain every time you had to do anything under the vehicle.. Gary

I have my 98 Disco in pretty good nic but after a few years of beach work (Once every 3 months or so) she is starting to show a bit of surface rust here and there but especially in crevices and joins.
As well, much of the original road noise deadener has fallen off and I'm looking at some time underneath to give her a treat. At the same time I will take the seats out and treat the floor from inside. I am befuddled by the amount of products available which just makes it more confusing.
So, my question is What product or tricks do you know of where I might be able to
1. Treat the rust that is starting and
2. Spray a 'tar like' protection over the exposed metal?
I have no intentions to dismantle everything! Maybe I will HAVE to dismantle some things like, the Fuel tank strap is a definite but, I don't really want to unscrew the car from itself if you get my drift.

A tin of rust converter and a brush for all the rust you can get at. Then a big bottle of lanolin or fish oil and a spray bottle to spray liberally over the whole underside and inside the chassis rails. Its a messy job, so if you don't want to get messy, there are people who will do it for actual money.

Under body sealant / fish oil mix works well.

I used Pale Boiled Linseed oil from bunnings and it seems to have worked a treat.
Soaks in and spreads well, dries to a semi hard finish.
Takes a few weeks to tack off and has a bit of an odour until it's cured.
Needed to be thinned with Turps?? (best check this) to spray with a $2 hand sprayer.
Used less than 2L to do the underside, 2 doors and firewall.
As I have a ute, the exposed chassis under the tray had sun bleached paint and surface rust showing. The linseed oil gave it a uniform finish that is now a semigloss black.
Just as a warning. Linseed oil soaked rags can self combust when drying.

If you use fish oil, make sure you get the one which doesn't smell or your truck will be on the nose, the wife will complain about 'that smell' and it might attract the neighbourhood cats!

Tectyl,a Valvoline product works very well,you can spray it on,but better if brushed on,as you get a thick coating that stays on for ages.

I'll look into what is the easiest and non stinkiest option. The Linseed oil is new to me, never heard of that one.
And to the smart arse who wants to know if I've got rid of all the oil leaks..........Would you believe I "nearly" have???
She's got 240,000 on the clock and I got rid of many by installing the Provent but I do have a Turbo that looks like it is passing oil on the compressor side. Otherwise the motor is pretty good.
I have fixed the rocker cover and replaced the vacuum pump to achieve my goal of having the only Disco in the world that can hold it's own oil.
(I know everyone has their fav gasket compound and I have used em all with limited success but an old mechanic put me onto "Stag" I find that this stuff really works well on this Landy anyway!
Having said that the transfer case still spits out oil at highway driving speed. Doesn't appear to come from anywhere but aint that always the case?
Transfer case leak - I have found with every lr I've owned (2 series3 2defender 1 disco 2) it's most likely the input shaft seal... from there the oil moves down between the gearbox & tc & often looks like it's comung from the bottom bolts on the tc cover plate.
Sorry for being a smart Alec earlier, I just couldn't resist it.
