Gents....
Can someone tell me if there is any differences between the 1996 and the 1998 model Discovery TDi Auto? Were there any issues with the 1996 model that was rectified in the later TDI models? Is there any Strengths / Weaknesses between the a '96 & '98 year TDI's or are the two basically identical?
I assume the running gear (ie: Axles/Transmissions/Transfer Case/Ratios) are "all" the same for a '96 and '98 model and if there was any changes that it was basic cosmetic changes ??
Any helpful advice would be much appreciated![]()
Ok.... so they are all basically the same then.... That's good to know![]()
Forget the EDC tdi's, they were not sold here so there is no issue , all year 300tdi's are the same apart from the different spec levels.
I have heard that 96-98 were built better than earlier years.

If you are pretty sure you are going to buy a Disco D1, spend $50 and buy the Haynes manual for the model (D1), it will tell you all dates of changes and details thereof made through the evolution of the D1 Disco.
I think from memory a lot of owners on this forum are not very complimentary of the Haynes book but I bought one when I got our first D1, about 5 years ago, I personally have found the book excellent in explaining the differences, sometimes subtle, between the different year models and how to do many common problem jobs on the vehicle, assuming you are a DIY person which you need to be when owning a Land Rover, either that or eccentric and rich.
It may help you make an informed decision on a vehicle, then when you buy the Disco of choice it will help you look after it, well worth the money IMHO.
I was told by well informed ex. employee that all Disco #1 manufacturing stopped after '97 to make way for the Disco #2.
All new Disco #1's were stock piled outside the factory prior to export & salesnice I'm sure, in UK winter.
To check the real date of manufacturing, look @ the tags on the seat belts
