Is the vehicle standard height or lifted with springs? A spring lift will put more angle on the coupling and stress it.
Hi all,
On the hunt again for the dreaded vibration that I thought I had cured. I recently picked up a rubber coupling from another forumite to try out, and hey presto all vibration disappeared. For a couple of days at least. It returned with a vengeance, a vibration that appears at certain speeds, either under load or coasting. I took off the rear driveshaft to have another look, and confirm that it is the rear and not the front. The donut was only installed a few weeks ago and already has small deep splits around most of the bolt holes. Safe to assume I need a new coupling but wondering what would cause it to give up so quickly? Wouldn't have thought a 300tdi auto would stress anything really.. The car is a disco 1, tdi auto btw. Any thoughts?

it is possibly lifted, the previous owner had heavier duty springs in the rear. If it is lifted it certainly isn't by much. Anyway, a trip to the wrecker today for something for my brothers Audi proved fruitful as I also found a Rangie classic and relieved it of its tailshaft. So bugger the donuts, I have to find some bits to fit the tailshaft now!
Thats unusual Rob , i've had the 3" lift in my disco for about 7 years and only destroyed the one 2nd hand donut .
Could it be the drive shaft ?

Curiouser and curiouser! So that I want driving around in front wheel drive I put the original donut back on and on the drive to work this morning there were no vibrations at all. This was the donut replaced in an effort to eliminate vibrations a couple of weeks ago. So I'm at a loss. I'll get the tailshaft checked and balanced but given that the vibration comes and goes and only at certain speeds I'd doubt it's that
having a think about it I can only assume that perhaps, just maybe a bolt or two may have overtightened last time causing the rubber to warp slightly. I was very careful this time to do the opposite bolts up gently at first, then tightening them in the same sequence until tightened up. Just home from work after a trip on the freeway and still no vibration at all! A couple more days going to and from work and I should know by the weekend if it was just my dodgy spanner work all along! Thanks loanrangie, will see how I go over the next few days
