I would have a guess and say the top. Heat rises . It would be interesting to try it on both anyway and then we could see the difference between the two and how much the cooler really works as some models don't have them anyway.

I finished off assembling an r380 gearbox over the weekend and what I noticed was the oil pump draws oil from the sump of the gearbox than pumps it to the bottom of the cooler outlets on the gearbox. It than enters through the top cooler inlet and to a plastic ring which the main shaft rotates through the oil is pumped into a gallery in the main shaft than distributed to the needle roller bearings.
My question is how could you ensure the oil pump is actually pumping?

If your gearbox doesn't self distruct in 500 km.......it's pumping!

Jokes aside, I was thinking the same thing since im in the process of asembling one of those. Maybe if some sort of pressure gauge is installed. But I don't know what is nominal pressure and what's lowest acceptable.

Clamped it to the out side of the cooler pipe. Like people here are doing with the acc engine temp gauge crimped in and eyelet under the thermostat bolt works great .it might get some radiated heat from the exhaust ..not sure yet
