Thread: Ok, so what have we done wrong ? ? ?

Late last year I picked up a 1993 D1 with a 3.9 in it, nice truck, however nothing flash (was going to be my potter around in the shed project so that SWMBO an I could have a V8 to play with again). It has ticked along quite nicely, up untill last weekend when it packed a sad, blew coolant everywhere and steam out the exhaust pipe. With the heads off, number three piston is all nice and steam cleaned, it still had steel head gaskets and everything under the rocker covers/valley gasket is a dark coffee colour and a little "sludgee" added to that a number of pitted and poorly seating exhaust valves and I am going to have to spend more than pocket change on this motor. So the question was, how, with the current cash flow issue (off work with a shoulder injury, so no O/T to spend on Land Rovers) are we going to get my project car, that has become my daily driver (when I can beat SHMBO to it) back on the road ?
At this point enter a 3.5 EFI from a 1988/89 RRC. The plan= with the aid of my soon to be son-in-law (a mechanic and sheetmetal worker) remove early inlet and fuel injection system from the 3.5, fit the inlet and fuel injection from the 3.9 and then refit the 3.5 to my Disco as a temp solution, while I/we get the 3.9 rebuilt. At the same time we decided to remove the A/C from the my disco (the last owner had......played with it, no gas and a hacked up loom). To be honest I was surprised just how much of a simple unbolt and bolt on job this was. By 1800hrs tonight we have, motor in, fuel to the fuel rail, spark to the spark plugs, suck, squeeze, ........, blow. No bang, it trys a bit but does not fire up. So what have we done wrong ? ? ?
