Thread: Gearbox clunk when warm?

Hi all, I just bought a 98 Discovery 1 v8 auto, awesome car! It has 265k on the clock, but once I had the radiator repaired and the transfer case replaced (as the original one was shot), the car is all good now.

When cold, the gearbox and drivetrain are great, no clunks, smooth shifting, no noise etc. But after driving for a while and the everything is warm, there is a mild clunk when the auto changes, and a decent clunk shifting between drive / reverse. Not there when cold.

Could it be blocked transmission fluid cooling lines? Does overheating lead to drivetrain clunks which go away when cold? Or does anyone have any suggestions?

I would also check the drive shafts and the diffs for play.
After replacing all major suspension components under my D1 I am still getting a mild clunk on some gearchanges myself.
Just has to be in the rest of the drivetrain somewhere, backlash in gears and axle spline wear, uni-joints, it all adds up. Even the drive shafts have splines that can wear and add to the general clunk.

Oh pity the poor machine, imagine the shivers it must go through on every gear change.
