Has anyone fitted a auto on/off headlight unit.

Can't say I know anyone that has on a D1, but you never know. It wouldn't be a hugely difficult job. It would just require a relay of sorts I guess, a switch (to turn the "auto on" feature off) and something like a ccd or the like to detect light levels.
Can't say I've seen any kits around for them lately. Used to see some stuff like this in kits from the likes of Jaycar. Did you have something specific in mind?

I fitted a couple of years ago a little PCB own designed, that turns headlights on seconds after oil pressure is enough to turn warning light off (after start).
The reason was, in my country is mandatory to run in highways with headlamps on. I was tyred from paying tickets when taking the route after refuelling, forgetting headlamps.
So, now the default is, headlamps turn on automatically, and I can stop them by depressing the "fog switch" during starting.
Additionaly I used another from these PCB to turn on sidelights, but this time driven with a fototransistor located on dash in the way some Discos II have it mounted. When it´s dark, sidelights turn on automatically.
