    engine swap

have a 98 tdi , has done a head gasket again . this is the second in the 5 months I have owned it with a new head going on when I fixed last time. looks like its got chemiweld in the block so maybe time to replace the complete motor so just need advice as to how hard it would be to swap out the old piece of junk and put another tdi back in . can pick a motor at a reasonable cost and im reasonably handy on the tools with help from friends . wayne

You should be ok then. Make sure you have a hoist of course and be prepared to pull more bits off it than what you'd think.

I usually also photograph it as I go, specifically looking at where all of the bits that have been unhooked are rehooked up in the right way - wires notably. I also put a zip tie onto anything that has been unhooked so I'll see it and not miss hooking it up again. Bolts, I also keep them in whatever they came out of rather than having a bucket of mixed bolts - been there, don't do it any more.

The only thing tricky that I can think of, is if its an auto, getting the reassembly sequence right so you don't break the auto pump when reassembling.
    Cheers

just don't know what to do about the disco , the body and interior are in great shape (looks like its had a recent repaint) but the motor is cactus . do i sell as parts or invest money again to fix the motor to maybe have it fail again . been on the back of a flat bed more than i've driven it

Hard call, if the block as you said is cactus then hunt for another short motor.
If cared for they will last, just replaced my head after blown hose ( could have been avoided) at about 325K, i reckon it will see double that if looked after.
