    Please explain

    Hi,

I have been doing some exhaust research lately and wanted to do the middle silencer and cat removal. I had a look at my disco and noticed the CAT is already out but I have a middle silencer.

I do have this other little thing on the downpipe after the turbo which i think is another type of emissions filter. I have added two pics here, one with the little thing and one without.

can someone please explain what it is and also is it restrictive to the system and would it be good idea to get pipe similar to the one without?

    Thanks

It is a flex join. The same as almost all pipework between engine and chassis have flexible section to allow for engine movement, so does the exhaust. I don't believe it restricts flow at all. It just allows a small amount of physical movement between engine and chassis.

It looks more like a flex joint than anything else, but not 100% sure.

Edit - Judo beat me to it.

    Air filter

On a slightly different but related topic. Im trying to get a little more, cheap power, hence why i was looking at exhaust. It occured to me i completely forgot about the air filter since i bought the car. It was filthy. Had leaves, gum nuts and a dead spider in the box. Cleaned it out put new filter in and what a difference. I mean the power is not noticeable, but the car runs so much smoother and the turbo lag is better. Idles better. Reminded me cars need to breathe. I feel like an idiot.

    yep

Breathing better goes better. in and out.

Complete exhaust would be best, but that would cost.

My td5 came factory no cat. The previous owner removed center muffler. I would have put a hiflow muffler in rather than straight pipe. best performance would be to open complete system up(bigger diameter pipes).

Filter there to stop dirt. that it does. chokes it up.

I chipped mine for more power

Aust spec D1 wouldn't have had a cat from new by memory anyway.

    No EGR

Yea i sorta figured it was like this factory actually coz if someone removed cat then why leave everything else? Plus the aussie d1s didnt have the same restrictions as the euro ones and had the exhaust blanking plate as a factory i believe, so assume no cat either like u said.

Ive always wanted to drive someone elses d1 just to see how it compares. I think mine has been pushed a few times before i bought it but it has a very good service history with every receipt from new of mods and sevices.

Just runs heaps better, i think much bigger exhaust wouldnt make a huge difference. The factory is 2.5 or 2.25 mandrel bend which is probably sufficent for the engine size. Dont think worth upgrading the lot. I think getting rid of mid silencer and hi flow one on the back should make as much difference for much less. Then play with pump. Still not sure why everyone says to install exhaust gas temp sensor. Why is this? Does playing with the pump heat exhaust? That much?

Yes, more fuel, more burn more temp.

Keep temps down = safety for the engine, less heat soak across the turbo to the inlet side. Can reach 700deg + in there. And thats only a pretty std setup. Big race setups can go over 1000deg.

And the EGR valve removal and blanking is aftermarket in all markets.

    Exhaust gasses

But the temp gauge will only monitor the temps? Wont actually control anything? So do you just change mixture until the temps stay down, or is it something you just monitor as your driving and if it gets hot you drive slower?

Sorry for questions, just trying to get head around it.
