If they had to make new plastic injection moulds I could believe that. Even with the buying power of a car maker they'd be paying ~$100k for each plastic mould.
Five of those and your budget is gone.

Wow!
Its a great way to earn beers.
In our company "pool" vehicles we get different cars all the time. So...when driving with someone and the wipers go instead of the indicator its a beer that night. The best win I have had so far is 13 in 150km. I did let the unfortunate bloke off lightly though and only claimed a few.
ALL my cars are on the left, where they should be:p
With a Lucas system, they are all on the dark side.
To me it's waaay more easier to have indicators on the right. That's why I did it. Your left hand is too busy anyway, gearshifter, smoke, scratch yourself, windows control etc. I guess it comes down to personal preference at the end.
How many times do you get flashed whilst you wash your windscreen instead of dipping high beam:p:p:p:p:p:p
Yep I get caught out all the time;););););)

Move to Adelaide, and you don't need indicators, so it doesn't matter what side they are on. Most cars here could be sold 5 years later, and describe the indicators as being "in as new condition"
Mind you, last time I asked one of the kids to check the indicators for me, I put the left on one, and called, "Is it working?"
"Yes. No. Yes. No. Yes. No." Came the reply.... :wasntme:
Wipers, on the other hand, you probably will need, considering the amount of rain we are having...
