    New member with some questions

Hi all I've just signed up and am looking at buying a landrover discovery. I want to get the turbo diesel to be more economical. I am currently driving a commodore V8 which I want to sell. Firstly what is the best year/model to get with a budget of $10,000. What is the fuel economy like on the TD version.(kms per tank) what things do I need to look out for and common problems. And for $10,000 what condition, kms etc should I expect? Sorry for all the questions. But I don't know really anything about these exept I love the look of them and the don't seem to be over priced. Also if there is anything else you can tell me or think I should know about them. I'd be really appreciative. Thanks in advance.

10K will get you a TDI (89-98) with plenty of change but a good one will cost you most of that, a D2 with TD5 is getting to the age where 10K will get an average to good vehicle.
Search each forum for the run down on each model, range is around the 800klm mark for each model with a few exceptions.

Look for one with a full service history. I cant remember the fuel economy of my diesel but i do recall it was bloody impressive.

    Smile Congratulations for good choice.

We have a '98 D1 300Tdi 5 speed manual S model (no frills), it has an 89 litre fuel tank, on a trip to NSW at highway speeds driving on the speed limits I can comfortably get 850 Klms on a tank. The strange thing about these old diesels is that your fuel consumption does not go much higher when using them off road or around town unless you give too much right boot, and high revs through the gears.
I would have to say I can only recommend them for a most capable, practical and comfortable all rounder, on road and off, and all that for a reasonable price, we paid just $4,800 for ours on ebay, with only 170,000 klms and all the books etc about 3 years ago. Gaz

I would if you can find one buy a D2 td5 as they go harder and the rear area is longer by 150mm than the D1 so a refrig fits so much better. JMHO.
    Again it is your choice.
A cheap D1 will give you change in your pocket for other items though.

bought a tdi300 auto 12 months ago now, and so far my average is a neat 10l / 100kms on the daily commute. Its been to Fraser island, where it averaged 15l/100km for the week, the high country and everywhere in between. I bought it with 190k on the clock and now has 225k, so a fair bit of driving in a year. Buy one with a service history and check on all the usual things you would with any car. They are not a complicated car, easy to fix, cheap to service with lots of parts to be had cheaply.
