    Parts interchangable diesel v petrol

    Hi all

ive searched the forum and cant find much in the way of parts interchangeable, Im looking at upgrading to a tdi from a 3.9v8.

What parts are interchangeable, looking mainly major stuff like diffs and gearboxes. the gbox in the one im looking at is stuffed, and the one ive got has lockers and 2 inch lift etc.

    any help is much appreciated
    Steve

Obviously engines are different. Gearboxes are different (bellhousing and ratios - v8 are taller). Everything else is the same (T-case, diffs, axles, etc...).

gearboxes are different somewhat- different input shaft, bellhousing, 5th gear is taller in the v8 truck. They can be used interchangably by swapping out input shaft and bellhousing. Ashcroft sells the v8 5th gearset as an upgrade option for the diesel R380.

Perhaps someone can correct me here, but I believe the LT230 final is lower with the diesel as well.

In no way is a Tdi a upgrade from a V8. Walk out to your V8 pull 3 leads off your spark plugs and go for a spin. That's the feeling your UPGRADE to a Tdi will be like.Add the stink and smoke and sound of a busted ass 1984 Toyota Dyna. LOL

Depends on your perspective i suppose. In my case, the tdi has loads more power than the pathetic v8 i replaced. Furthermore, the mpg gain is nothing to scoff at either.

Better to drive 10mph below the speed limit and get 24mpg than to drive 10mph below the speed limit and get 12mpg

Wow you must have had a absolute ****box of a V8 to think a Tdi has more power Tdi 86kw Vs a 3.9 V8 131kw. That is a fair difference,i have had a 200 Tdi and a 300 Tdi and not any of the Tdi's i have ever driven could match the Range rovers or Discovery V8's i have ever owned even a carb fed 3.5. You are spot on about the mpg, very easy to achieve when you move at the speed of a ice age

I suspect the v8 has a much bigger problem with horses escaping than the tdi does.
Even at 160000km it took a compete retune of my v8 to make it feel like it should.
Before that it was very very slow. Throw in a bit of cam wear and it gets even worse.

Yes mine was a real dog. Perhaps I have not seen a prper running v8. Every one over here is just the same. Horrendous mpg for the power it produces. Imo the rover v8 at its base is far behind the technology curve of its day. Even if running at its published power/mpg levels, it is still pathetic compared the vehicles it competed against.

LT230 ratios are the same V8 or TDI auto or manual , my tdi would leave either of my old V8 rangies for dead.
1 was 3spd auto with fresh hi comp 3.5 the other a 3.5 with 350 holley, bosch and dizzy and some head work.
A good 3.9 would be fairly even til the tdi runs out of puff.
