97 Land Rover Disco Fuel Economy

    Hi everyone,

First time posting what a great website!
Not long ago I brought a 97 Land Rover Discovery, it is the 3.9L V8. I didn't buy it as an everyday car I brought it for the beach and camping.
However I have noticed it does drink the fuel rather dramatically. I mean 200km to a tank..
Does anyone else have this problem? Or is it just a thirsty V8?
Also my interior lights worked on and off when I first got it but they stopped. I pulled out the light and cables in the front but sparked, think something has tripped but can't find the fuse!
Love driving this beast and I am new to all of this any tips would be fab!

    Cheers
    Misha

Your car has an issue - you should be getting about 450 - 500km before having the refuel with mixed driving. 14l/100km on the highway, 17 around town and about 20 offroad and 22 on the beach.

The engine is no worse on fuel than other 4wds with similar sized petrol engines - in fact the engine is normally a bit more economical.

I would be checking the ECU coolant temp sensor and then the MAF, how is the engine running? in my V8 I was getting 12.54L/100Klms on the highway and 16L/100Klms on my work run, that was with standard tyres 2" lift x-rocs bar and winch.

    Thanks Boony73,

It could very well just be the fuel gauge is busted. I took it to the Land Rover place here when I first got it they did something with the ECU to disconnect the immobiliser so it has no alarm.
Where do I find the coolant temp and MAF?
To me it runs fine it's in the mechanic at the moment getting a few things fixed like a few hoses, a bad leak to the radiator, something to do with the brakes a master cylinder I believe.. The timing belt kept squealing. Might give them a call and mention the fuel economy. I also told them about an idling problem it would keep stalling!
Thanks for your help. These cars are all new to me!

Sounds like something is affecting your fuel consumption.
Your fuses should be under the dash on the driver's side.
Have you got a manual such as Haynes (I got mine at Repco) or the RAVE one which is downloadable?

The engine does not have a timing belt - it is a chain.

I assume you mean the auxiliary serpentine belt (the fan belt in old terminology) so if squealing will need at a minimum tightening or better still replace.
