I use the fuel bowser reading and odometer reading. Could be an interesting question to put to the service station.
Has anyone actually experienced a tooth jump?
Yes.
1-2 teeth, any more and the valves will hit pistons and probably shred the belt entirely - which i have also seen, albeit on a 200 tdi that was, unsuccessfully, started with timing pin still in the injection pump. it ripped most of the teeth clean off the belt, bent pushrods, cracked the pump housing and made one heck of a mess.
Back on track - A sudden change in resistance, i.e. injection pump hickup can make it jump.
Altho most are out due to error at initial setup or stretch.

In reading through the comments etc I didn't read anywhere where the air cleaner element has been changed. Blocked air intake will cause decrease in power, increase in fuel consumption and black smoke. Suggest connect a vacuum gauge to the air intake to ensure there is not excessive air restriction at stall.
To rule out a fuel leak into the sump you could take a sample of the oil and have it tested to ensure it doesn't contain excessive fuel.
Good luck.
I had a fuel lift pump leaking into the sump at one stage so it can happen.

Thanks guys, just filled it up to see what I am currently getting so will let you know how it goes. All filters were the first thing I changed! Also a wierd thing happened on the way home the other day. Struggling along at 100 I slowed for a set of lights then as I accelerated the motor started to pull really strong like nothing was wrong. I backed off then cruised along at 100 with hardly any pedal. A few mins later it was back the old way. Any thoughts? Maybe some sort of blockage in a pipe somewhere that is only partially blocked and the blockage shifted for a min?
Regards,
Lane
A blockage can't make it use more fuel just not posable
And if its blocked it can't supply the fuel to over fuel thus it can't actually use more fuel that's not there to be used
Rear sediment filter maybe full of slim. This will make it go terrible. Then you try to over compensate with your right foot.
