Firstly, it's kilometre.
Secondly, it depends on which motor.
Personally, I reckon a V8 will require a freshen up from 400,000km. My 3.5 did.
Well I'm still on the hunt and I would like to know how much is too much, I been seeing a fare few with around 350,00k saying they been serviced regularly then there are other that don't say and some with low k's round 1180,000k. So how much is too much, like do they required a rebuild at certain k's or what![]()

Swinging the broad axe and drawing my long bow.
250K intervals usually require something major be it clutch, brakes, head gasket, bottom end or complete engine refresh. (and thats assuming that it doesnt/hasnt been taken out or redone becuase of overheating/abuse)
roughly.
tdi(x)00s want a head gasket at 250Km and a bottom end at 500k
v8s are a mixed bag but expect head gaskets from 100-250K Km (cooling system leak at the back) and heads+cam+related at from 350-500K Km depending on engine variant
autos if serviced and looked after meticulously are good for upto 1M K but realstically 500K Km can be a big ask the oil condition is your give away along with smoothness of shifting.
manuals are again a mixed bag the lt77 (reverse up left) is a good box if it hasnt been worked hard but is going to be getting tired by 500K Km the r380 is good for nearly double but again that depends on how late in production it came out, and then theres the clutch..... your guess is as good as mine on that.
and every bit of advice I just gave goes completely out the window when you factor in is it a wednesday build thats been driven and maintained by someoen with perfect driving habits and a deep wallet with plenty of patients or is it a a monday build thats been driven by a lead footed redneck with a wallet so shallow even a scottsman would wince if asked to operate on such a a pittance.

Mick was just trying to say welcome , some of us come from different parts of the globe and are very different in age and possibly went to different schools. Sometimes the older are less tolerant.
If one wishes to be pedantic , then we would be talking about "engines".
Welcome rowland0 , every vehicle is different, and has been serviced or not serviced in different ways, some change oil every 5k and some every 10k and some just seem to think it only needs topping up and therefore its constantly being changed. Can you believe the odo reading ?
Buying s/h is a calculated risk, good luck.
Plenty of high mileage 300TDI's still knocking about .http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...p-e-c-t-2.html
One has even passed the magic 1 Million Km's milestone
Guess it all comes down to how they have been treated and looked after.

My Tdi, which is not the original in the vehicle, has done about 300,000ks and has needed head gasket and some work on the ancillaries (fuel pump, alternator etc). Be fussy about if the timing belt has been done every 80,000km.
My transmission, which is up to 340,000, has needed a major overhaul in the last year, including transfer, auto and driveshafts, and now seems fine.
Mind you, I'm still chasing down rogue oil leaks as I type.
Don't forget to be fussy about rust in the front footwells, the opera windows and sunroofs.
