You only have to take the plate off the back of the transfer to check if the output shaft is stuffed

With the back plate off can you see into the bore of the input gear? The mainshaft may be spinning inside of it due to worn out splines. Not uncommon to see bad spline wear in earlier LT230 transfer cases.

Check the drive shafts out of the centre diff, had a similar thing happen to me, except I had drive with the CDL engaged. Also you couldn't spot it from just looking into the inspection plate, the broken piece was inside the spider gear housing.

With the back plate off you can remove the carrier bearing and pull the gear out to inspect, when mine was still a manual i replaced the gear with the improved oil hole update one as both the output shaft and idle gear were worn, it wasnt a total fix but it did take out a fair bit of slop.

How can we pull bearing and gear out?Do you screw a bolt in and pull or do you need a puller

Pulled gear out,no splines.Took one out of an auto and it looked different.Manual box had been done up by the look of all the red sealant and seems the gear was installed back to frontSplines on shaft look a bit worn but still seems plenty of meat there. Will give it a try.

I think i paid about $70 for a new input gear from ebay.uk, make sure you count the outside splines and replace with the same, even if the splines are 1/2 worn on the out put shaft it will get you mobile as a temporary fix.
