Question Fuel Tank Capacity on the Disco-1?

    Gents...

I've recently filled up the Disco for the 2nd time and was surprised as to how much it took. The Owners Manual indicates that it holds 89ltrs and that the Low Fuel Warning comes on when there's 9ltrs left.....
I left work today and the Low Fuel Warning level came on (which was good to know that it worked), so I called into the Servo to Refuel. I filled it up as much as u can so it was at the top of the filler (same as I did when I 1st bought the car a few weeks ago). The Bowser read 89.45ltrs..... Now, I know I still would or should have had at least 5>7ltrs or there abouts left in the tank, so I'm wondering what the Fuel Tank actually holds.... It's definitely more than 89ltrs as per the book.....

Does anyone know what these tanks actual capacity is?

BTW: This being my 1st FULL tank that I've run through it, I was interested in finding out what sort of Fuel Economy I got..... factoring in the 9.6% larger tyres (235/85/16) I'm running, the economy came out to be 11.5ltrs/100kms. Very pleased with that, being it an Auto & having the larger tyres too + having 311,000kms on the clock as well....

It is 89 litres - not sure what the filler pipe and expansion chamber holds - this would be in addition to the 89 litres as they are not supposed to be filled.

The light coming on at ~9L remaining may also be a furphy. My second D1 needed a petrol station within about 20km.

Filler neck was at least another 5L, usually more if patient enough to let the foam disappear. But it's not really meant to be used as extra capacity.

Most I have ever filled was 95L. This was after driving about 80km with the low fuel light on. Mind you my disco has standard tyres and manual tranny.

I'm hoping that this discussion is around diesel not petrol, as brimming a petrol tank is seriously not recommended...

Official capacity of both is 89.0ltrs / 19.5 imp gallons. But that is to the standard 3-click fill. It does not include the extra volume of trickle-filling beyond the recommended fill.

FWIW - my low-fuel light comes on when I have around 23-25ltrs left (std 3-click fill) which means that my fuel gauge drops at a terrifying rate. Pessimistic doesn't even come close...

Yes, referring to diesel....but just curious here.... Why not fill to the top with a petrol?
I've been doing this on my little zook for the past 7yrs w/o any issues at all

You do this and on a warm day the petrol will expand and travel forward down the breather line and flood the charcoal canister. Then you have a plastic canister full of and leaking fuel under the bonnet right next to a hot zappy engine. What could go wrong in this scenario?

Fair enough, I can understand that, especially if u live in a hot climate, lucky for me I don't have a charcoal canister.
Also... I would have thought that by simply driving down the road 5 or 10kms (depends on what economy u get), u just used potentially 1ltr of fuel, creating an air pocket/expansion area for the fuel anyhow ?
    I might be wrong though....

    Yep. What Bee Utey said...

Aside from the safety risks... it'll kill the charcoal canister and fuel will go everywhere and/or pressurise the system which can cause damage to all sorts of stuff (valves, solenoids, pumps, lines, connections, etc) depending on the specific system being used. The canister is only designed for vapour, so if it gets liquid fuel it saturates and stops working. So your engine then can't recover that energy from the vaporised fuel, or gets a gut-full of liquid when it purges it into the intake, rather than a bit of vapour, making it run badly and use excessive fuel. You use more fuel, dramatically increase emissions and you risk damaging stuff. Therefore not generally recommended. Diesels are a bit more forgiving due to the differences in expansion rates and the fuel systems themselves, but I wouldn't brim one and then not immediately drive it to burn off 5 ltrs or so (could be 80kms plus depending on what engine/towing/off-road/etc).

Of course in an ideal world no-one breaks down or gets stuck in the traffic just out of the servo and has to watch a spreading puddle of petrol under the vehicle at risk from any passing butt throwing smoker.
