So you are saying if you loose speed pulses you loose tacho and temp guge? Doesn't make sense!

Hi guys.
I am just posting this because even though the cure for this is around the web it is in three or four different threads.
I was driving along and lost the analog instruments in the panel.
All auxiliaries still worked.
All lights worked.
All start up lights and on dash still worked.
Trouble shooting.
Checked all fuses one by one in panel under steering wheel. All okay
Disconnected and reconnected all the plugs cleaning while apart with air
Checked main fuse box. All okay
Disconnected auxiliary and main battery. Heard click on reconnect.
Cleaned all contacts on battery and alternator.
Checked all earths at front and rear I could find.
The thing still did not work.
Okay so under the car is the Speed sensor which sends an electrical pulse to the instrument panel to get the speed rather than a cable.
Under the car.. removed the contacts. blasted with WD40 and cleaned it as best as possible. Reconnected and re-blasted until it looked clean.
BINGO everything sprang back into life.
It took me the best part of day but on the upside I now have a much better understanding of the electrical system!
So you are saying if you loose speed pulses you loose tacho and temp guge? Doesn't make sense!

Hi Disco1996,
I am having the same problem, only thing is, sometimes mine works, other days it doesn't or it will just start working all of a sudden.
Is your fix still good? If so could you give me a better idea of where the speed sensor is located? I have a 96 Disco V8.
Cheers
The root cause is a bad ground in the instruments. That is where you should look.
You must have fixed it bay accident while cleaning and reconnecting other stuff. Speed sensor not making connection won't affect other gauges!

So I need to remove the instrument cluster then?
