Question '96 Disco Auto won't start in Park but will in Neutral

    Guys....

Just having an issue with starting my D1 Auto. It won't start in Park but will start in Neutral. I had a bit of a look in the manual and it seems it might be related to the "Start Inhibit / Reverse Light Switch".

Has anybody else had this issue and if so, what's the solution? A New switch or can u remove and clean it or is it possibly a bad electrical connection??

Haven't had a chance to get under yet to look more closely, hopefully on my next day off....

    G'day Rob,

I haven't had the problem on my auto in the Disco but many years ago working on a Holden auto I had to fiddle with (adjust) the selection lever/switch to get it to start in either P or N. From memory the N gate was longer than the P gate and so you could get it to start in N but it wouldn't quite engage in P. I'd check the linkages to make sure nothing has slipped and then the selector lever.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Remove the gear indicator cover & make sure a coin or something else is preventing Park from fully engaging.

    Question

Thanks guys.... I'll try that when I get a chance....

Upon reading the Manual, it seems the "Start Inhibit / Reverse Light Switch" is one unit, so I would assume the Reverse Lights should be playing up if it was this switch.... but the reverse lights are working fine..... So, I'll have a look at the lever / linkages...

I guess its fairly easy to gain access to both of these?

Does the pawl engage correctly in park, if not you may just need to adjust the cable on the selector.
You wont have EDC so not sure if that diagram is correct for your vehicle.

Yes, it does seem to engage properly in "P". (ie. it locks into place and the car cannot roll anywhere)

Well stuff me..... Just got home work and I go to put it Park on the drive way to get out to check the mailbox and the car started rolling away... Won't go in Park. To adjust this cable, do I need to remove the centre console, etc or is it under the Car on the Auto?
