    petrol pump 93 disco V8

    i'm thinking of putting an inline fuel pump in my 3.5lt disco as a backup pump. has anyone done this?

    What's your reasoning? If the in-tank pump fails the inline backup pump will just cavitate and not pump in any case. Inline pumps need a flooded suction by being mounted low and right next to the tank, or need a separate low pressure lift pump inside the main tank. You're better off just replacing the in-tank pump before it dies. A VN Commodore in-tank pump is easy to adapt and cheap enough to carry as a spare.

    my reasoning behind it is simular to the volvo idea of having a backup fuel pump. and secondly without dropping the fuel tank out there is no access to the intank pump. as some smart person has put 3 gas cylinders in the back covering the access panel.

    Volvos don't have a backup pump. They have a low pressure in-tank pump and a high pressure inline pump as per my previous post. Either pump fails and the car stops. On the very earliest Volvo 240 series they only had one pump, a high pressure pump right next to the lowest point of the tank.

    As for getting at your in tank pump, the LPG manifold tank (not "3 gas cylinders") can usually be quickly unbolted and swung up to 45 degrees and propped up without undoing the plumbing. Adds about 1/2 an hour to the job, I've done it plenty of times.

    the tanks can not be unbolted and swung up as you suggested without undoing the plumbing. the plumbing as at the rear of the tank towards the back door. and it is mounted on 6 brackets that stop it from being "swung" up. all the plumbing needs to be removed before the gas system can be moved even 1 inch. so there is no access what so ever to the fuel pump.
    and as for volvo's not having 2 fuel pumps, I have a volvo 264GL that has 2 seperate inline pumps, the primary one is beside the fuel tank, and the backup or secondary one is towards the motor. and the secondary one only kicks in if the primary one fails. I have checked this out myself by disconnecting the one near the tank.

    That's sad news. Not only do you have a badly designed gas tank bracket, you also have a volvo with a different fuel pump arrangement than the dozens of volvos (4 cyl AND 6 cyl) I have worked on over the years. Maybe someone fitted an early model fuel tank and pump to a later model system. After all they all share the same floorpan from 1976 to 1992.

    If you want me to have a look and advise on the tank mountings, feel free to contact me. LPG fitting is my day job and I'll happily donate 1/2 an hour to a good cause. Oh and by "swinging up" I mean to 45 degrees to the right hand side where the plumbing is connected. You don't have to tilt it towards the front of the vehicle.

    the gas tanks have brackets on the front and back, and a set in the middle of the tanks. so still not possible. and as for the volvo, which is off topic, all is factory fitted as i have owned it from new, it is one of the early V6 264's. not many are around now days. and not really sure how many were sold in Aus as it's impossible to get an exhaust manifold secondhand. so had to get complete custon system done.

    pics of gas tank.

    included are pics of gas tank setup. as you can see at the back it is bolted directly to the floor and at the front it is bolted to uprights. can't get good pic of middle bolts but they too are directly to floor.

    Can't see any pics (hint: use the "manage attachments" button lower down the page or the "insert image" button for web based pics) but I can tell you that you can easily get under a d1 and put some vice grips on the nuts to hold them to get the bolts off.

    pics should be up now. this one is bolt rear passenger, between fuel tank and floor. the front bolt I can not locate so am assuming it also is.
