    Landrover xr6 turbo??

    Hi Guys and Gals,

About 2 years ago I bought a very tidy 98 v8 d1 for a $1000 with a suspected blown head and 300k's on gas. This was our budget play off-roader while we were both on "career break" after the birth of our first child. We have since returned to work, as such our budget is looking a little healthier.....new gu8 patrol healthier not new discovery healthier unfortunately.

I am really struggling with the idea of parting with the old girl but can't afford to keep her unless she is used as a daily.

She is a pig at 3-4km to the litre (gas or petrol). She owns the road...by that I mean she wanders all over it, scared the beejesus out of a unsuspecting I30 driver just today. After long periods of off-roading decides she needs a break, just cuts out and won't start for about 25 mins. Sweats all over the driveway. She is a fat, lazy pig and I love her.....I can't explain it.....it must be a land rover thing.

I do have a point.....As well as my inexplicable, sick and twisted desire for bbo's (big beautiful off-roaders) am an absolute ford junkie and would really really like to fit a xr6 turbo motor to her. My mechanical skill/knowledge extends as far as changing the oil, so I'd have to pay someone. I'm happy to allocate $15k to the project which would have to include motor ($6k). Can it be done for $9k?? I would allocate additional funds to the drive train (Ashcroft) and other mods I haven't yet got to. I hope to bring it in under $25k all up, which is a lot of money to me....but still less than the $65k price tag for a patrol.

Any advice, positive or otherwise greatly appreciated :-)

    Cheers

Nah, you need low down torque.

Surely a Windsor or Cleveland would be better?

Unfortunately, it looks Marks Adaptors only do kits to adapt LR gearboxes to GM engines.

However, you might need a stronger auto for a GM V8 so the alternative is to use a GM engine and a GM trans adapted to the LT230 transfer. See http://www.marks4wd.com/transfer-cas...and-rover.html

Why not. The biggest issue will be length of the motor though.

Low down torque, I scoff at you. I have an f6 which is basically the same motor and it develops 565 nm from 1500 rpm. The XR6 is just a little below that but a damn fine engine. I have had similar thoughts with my Defender. I wonder if I could fit it in with the ZF 6 speed. Hmmn! It would be nice.

If you don't go off road , why not buy a Territory turbo. You will get a pretty good one for 25K.

My son has one after totalling his FPV Typhoon with edits and exhaust for 350Kw at rear wheels.

He had an edit done and now says in practical terms it is faster than the FPV as it has traction off the line and he loves it.

And about 11Lper100KM cruising and about 14 around town.

$25k would buy 2 td5 d2s or 3 v8 d2s. However if people did engine swaps because they made financial sense we would all be driving round with standard engines.
