    Is The Risk Worth It???

Well I'm still on the hunt for 300tdi and I keep coming across ones with blown head gasket, now there like "yeah man just needs a new gasket and she'll be right mate" . My question is if this is the truth( is it that easy) or is there more to it as I thought a blown gasket caused a fair bit of damage. I have searched around on here and some people have gotten away with just a new gasket but alot of people seem to need a new head.

So is it worth buying one that needs it done or is it just a case of the money I would spend on fixing it be better of putting towards one that running, the one I'm looking has done 397,000km and has $3000 on it.

    Thanks rowland

3k for a blown one with 400k on it is ridiculous! !! I picked up my 98 model 300 tdi disco with 145k on it for a $1000 with timing belt done 20k prior. Be patient.

Alot of the times when they over heat the head need to be hardness tested Before a new gasket goes in. My advice iif your happy spending 3k is buy a complete running 300tdi for 4-5k (should get something real good in that price range) part the rest of it and get 1-3k back atleast u have driven it then.

I wouldn't pay more than 1k for a motor with blown head... unless I was desparate

x2, $3K for 300tdi with blown head gasket and 400,000kms on the clock is too much. The risk of encountering other problems are too great.

Check the Complete Engines section of the AULRO Marketplace forum as there there were several offered for sale recently. That should give you an idea of what you should be paying.

    Hi Rowland,
it sounds like the red one in northern Tas. It would be a risk at $1000. I've recently picked up a 95 tdi with 240k and timing belt done for $3200 and a 97 tdi 270k for $3k. Both Tas regoed and drivable. Keep looking, not many for sale in Tas but they do pop up from time to time.

I believe that head gaskets blow because of warping (between cylinders 2 and 3, which then causes overheating, not overheating and then head gasket blows.
If you buy one with a blown head gasket you could end up needing a new head (about $1K).
Now if the previous owner drove the vehicle to a standstill it may have stopped with Hyd. lock which could mean damaged rods/pistons or even crank..
Unless you know the circumstances of the breakdown and that doesn't mean taking the prev. owners word on it, I would steer away from a broken 300TDi.
If you buy a running 300TDi and it blows a head gasket, AT LEAST YOU WILL KNOW THE CIRCUMSTANCES, as it is a simple engine and replacing a head gasket or a head is not beyond most, esp. with the help of this Forum, good luck, Regards Frank.

I'm with Frank but if the rest of the vehicle is good and maybe has some accessories i would take the chance if the k's were reasonable and the price low enough to factor in the $1200 odd to replace the head and other related items- so really than means 1-3K tops unless the acc. value exceeds the cars.

    Hi Rowland,

I picked up my 95 300tdi disco (360k on the clock) for $2800 - with rego & everything working correctly. There are well priced tdi's out there, as others have said, just be patient.
3k is too much considering the high k's and a blown head gasket - how negotiable is the price?

I been on the hunt for a bit and in the time its taken me to save up some cash seems all the low k disos under 5k have been snaped up haha but like a few of you guys have said I need to be less impatient (I JUST WANT ONE!!! ) and wait for one to come along.

    Thanks guys
