    mystery warning light

1996 300tdi auto SE7. An undocumented symbol on the dash has recently and intermittently appeared. Its an outline of the car body in red. Flickers on and off, seems unrelated to engine speed, vehicle speed or gear. Its just to the right of the battery symbol in the top RH corner.

The owners manual shows a blank space where this symbol appears but no mention of what may go there. It doesnt illuminate with the ignition turned to on like all the other symbols. Anybody else seen this? Mr Google has not helped!

It's an outline of the car body with a key inside it. Something to do with alarm/antitheft in some markets I'd imagine. If your car isn't fitted with it, could possibly be a short or a wire rubbing through somewhere in the loom and grounding the circuit bringing the light on.

I had the same problem with the antilock light coming on. Turned out to be a rubbed through were in the passenger footwell. My D1 is pov spec and has no ABS.

Just a thought. Could it possibly be that the battery in your key fob is on the way out?
A while back, my fob battery died but before it finally failed totally, I was having trouble with the immobiliser. I would turn the key and all the lights on the dash went out as if it was cranking, but nothing happened. New battery in my key fob and it worked perfectly from then on.
