Trimmed down the front bumper and fitted recovery points![]()
Last weekends fun.
Trimmed down the front bumper and fitted recovery points![]()
Got my back bumper finally fitted. Was a bit more fiddly than I predicted. I thought it would be over fairly quickly but got me a few hours to get it right.
The worst job of the day though was trying to fix the rear lights. I couldn’t get the left hand globe to sit right so decided to pull the lights out completely to have a look. Turns out was probably one of the worst jobs I have ever done on the car. The little plastic wingnut thing to get the bracket off on the bottom mount basically fought me to the end. I couldn’t get any tool onto it except small pliers which would only do a quarter turn with the other three quarters having to do by hand. It started getting very painful quite soon and took forever with my fingers in a bit of pain still today.
Anyway, because I had the top nut undone, I managed to lever off the light fitting without having to take the bottom one off completely.
Turns out the reason for my tail/brake globe not fitting in properly and not working is because the little metal bits in the actual light unit are bent or coming off so I couldn’t twist the globe and get contact. I managed to move the metal contacts to get the globe to touch the metal and the brakes and light started working, although when I took the globe out again I noticed this (see image). Was a brand new globe. Looks like it overheated very quickly. Was quite hot to touch even after about a minute when I went to take it out.
Any ideas? I know bad contacts can arc the current across which cause heat. So could be that. I originally thought it wasn’t working because of earthing issues (which may still be another issue) but I haven’t checked that yet.
But the left hand side now finally gets at least something. I still have the issue though that when my lights are on, the right hand side light completely turns off when I press the brakes and only the left and door brake lights come on.
I may end up getting new rear light units anyway as the old ones seem to be falling apart.

I posted similar comments a while back in some other thread.
Why they made is to hard is beyond comprehension.
This is why I tried hard .. and harder to eventually change all globes to LEDs.
Not easy, but now I got the info as to what's needed.
Had a few globes blowing out.
First time .. ah! .. just a typical UK design lunacy see it on many Rovers and Jags in the past.
Third time .. no joke now .. far too many lacerations to hands .. time to change tack .. -> LEDs!
The really weird part is that the globe holders go in what seems so easily with the light out. With the light unit fitted back onto body, they suddenly become impossible to fit, where they fitted easily only a second ago!
Arthur.
All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

I had a leaking oring on the injector pump head, so i decided to take it to bits following all the instructions on the net I could find.
I would a broken spring inside and play in the shaft, so I ended up putting a reconditioned pump back in.
Here is the old pump in bits. I did reassemble it though.
Dad did put a 3rd party boost pin in the old injector pump. The new pump and pin performs better overall, however the 3rd party pin does make the boost come on sooner, despite the hole in the diaphram. I will be fitting the 3rd party pin this weekend along with an EGT to make sure it doesn't get too hot
In preparation for the trip south to the 12 Apostles
* Changed the oil on the diff's and transfer case
* new fan belt and air con belt
* installed EGT and Boost sensors
* tweaked fuel injector pump (whoops, a bit too much black smoke) and adjusted to reduce the smoke
* installed cargo barrier
