Exclamation HELP - 300tdi Loss of Power, Black Smoke

Hey guys, purchased a Disco 300tdi as my first car which needed some initial work. Have so far replaced the head gasket, redone the valve seals and replaced a number of leaky radiator hoses etc.

A new problem arose the other day when I was driving to work, suddenly loss of power..car was topping out around 60km and taking a long time to get there! lots of black smoke & not revving past 2k and no turbo whistle.

Everyone I have talked to has said it's a turbo problem (collapsed/delaminated hose) and I have checked what I can, there doesn't seem to be a problem with any hoses that I can see. Turbo spins freely by hand with little play...

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem or heard of this problem? I really love this car and currently just don't have the money to purchase a new turbo

    Would appreciate any suggestions!
    Thanks Heaps

assuming it starts and idles nicely then most likely it is a turbo hose delaminating internlly or possibly the waste gate stuck open. Its very rare but the intercooler might also be blocked.

give the hoses a squeeze, if they are soft they should be replaced,

you could also have a blockage in the exhaust.

I agree with the hoses and suggest you take a better look as they can be deceiving, timing belt is another problem after a recent rebuild and could possibly jump a tooth or 2.

I'd it starts easy, idles nicely its most likely not the timing.

Check the intercooler hoses, flow through the intercooler and the exhaust.

Try it with the air cleaner disconnected

Thanks heaps guys, will definitely check out these options....I noticed when removing the intake pipe from the intercooler that there was some oil lining the inside of the pipe, is this a bad sign??

mines, loosing a bit of power and blows a bit of black smoke too.
Almost stalls, when attempting a hill start with the air con on.
Just replaced my hoses with the terafirma silicon kit, has made a small improvement so far, but I do intend to take the intercooler and manifold to clean out, also check and replace the inlet manifold gasket. I'm also waiting on a few bits to do the timing belt. I'll update as i progress through each to let you know. This weekend pending parts and time.

All turbos pass some oil in some conditions.

FYI a pic to show why you should check your intercooler occasionally:

A D1 intercooler at 400 000km without a proper clean. Probably around 75% reduced airflow.
