    Question The Landrover journey

    Hi All,
so this is the beginning of my journey into the mechanic of landrover.
I've owned my disco series 2, 1995 2.5 diesel for about 3 years now. In fact its the family car. We've been up to exmouth, WA a few times and many times down south, packed with my teenage kids and pets. The car has had very few problem until now. I'm signing up to this forum because i'm going to need advise going forward. I don't come from a family of mechanics and my tools are limited but i'm determined to get this car up and running again. We now have a run around car so the pressure is off to tow it to the mechanics.
Below is the situation with the car. The long story short.

It was always a bit tricky changing gears but we adapted fine. No dramas. Then, about a few weeks ago it started to get stuck in reverse. It towed to a transmission mechanic who was planning to install a clutch kit ($1500) to solve the problem. After getting into the transmission, it was discovered that the spigot bushing at the end of the crankshaft was missing and over time worn the crankshaft (opening which seats the bushing) out of round. It was suggested by the transmission mechanic that the crankshaft will need to be replaced (part only $500) but the labour to do it would cost upward of $3000.
This would need to be done prior to the clutch kit going in.

So, some sage advise from the group here would help a lot. I have time and the interest to do this repair but don't want to embark on this journey if theres a better way (cost and time) to get the vehicle up and running again. A friend suggested the option of buying a used Engine and transmission combo and replacing whats there. With exception to this present problem, The existing engine runs well. This my not be the case after I've finished messing with it though!!.
The other option is I could removed the Engine and replace the crackshaft
myself. The transmission and clutch have already been removed. Any advise on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards.
ps. - Please feel free to give me a call on 0421168480 or I'd be more than happy to call you.

Depending on the actual state of the crankshaft, it is very likely that it could be bushed for a new pilot bush. However, this would be a hand fitting job that few mechanics would even consider doing.

Faced with your situation I would certainly take it on myself, although I have never had this problem, but - I have a fairly well equipped workshop, and I would be reluctant to do it on someone else's vehicle!

Tony. I tried to ring you but got some stupid recorded message.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
