sound like the classic broken starter solenoid. Have you tried hitting the solenoid with a stick or tap of a hammer. Then turn the key it sometimes will start. But only a temp fix to get you going if your lucky
Hi all
Thought I had a problem with the starter motor on the disco,
Turns out it's not the starter or the relay in the drivers footwell.
When I turn the key I just get a click from the starter ....
And before anyone asks the batterys new and in good shape (fully charged)
Dose anyone no anything I might have missed?
It's a 98 D1 V8
Thanks
Paul

Put a second starter in and the same thing.....
Tryed the old hit it snd see, still the same just a click
Clean up the earth lead or maybe try a jumper cable as an earth lead.

If all the above fail and still no start, try a temporary hotwire direct from positive on the battery to the starter solenoid, see if that will get a result.
A common issue is the spade connector from the ignition start key wire to the starter solenoid gets cooked beneath exhaust manifold, the connection becomes weak and will not pull the solenoid in properly enough to make the high amp contacts close to power the starter.
Both my Tdi's have had to have relays put in the starter solenoid circuits, this has cured my starter problems completely.
If you are a bit handy with auto electrics a relay and some wire can be had for under $15, you may not have any more trouble starting. Gaz![]()
