    300tdi and Auber sensors

    Hi all,

Its been many years since I have been on here, but alas the LR Gods have struck me with the ownership of another 300tdi Discovery

Without going into too much detail (my youtube channel and blog is there for that), I have installed an Auber 2813 dual channel gauge and already used one channel for the Auber EGT Sensor.

What I like to do is use the second channel for the water temp. Basically I want to use the original water temp sender location, remove the sender and replace it with the Auber PT100. Yes this will disable the original water temp VDO, but im happy to anyway as this gives real time measurements.

Question is, will this fit in the tight space give the sensor dimensions? I have already asked to confirm thread size (I believe its 1/8-27NPTF?).

Any thoughts or experiences on this?

I think you would be better off using another location for the temp sensor as the original is not ideal for proper heat management.

I already have a head temp sensor, and I really dont want to cut a coolant pipe (eg heater pipe) to fit the sender, hence why the original spot sounds good. Ill keep looking around for options/alternatives, but there isnt much on google using this combination.

There is a plug in the top of the head, forwards of and in line with the heater outlet. Why not take out the plug and drill and tap it to 1/8 NPT. The plug is the same thread as a head bolt, M12 x 1.5 I believe.

I didnt know there was that plug there.... yes will also look at that, perhaps its easier to mount the sensor anyway

Edit: I tried looking for this on diagrams etc but cant find the plug you are referring to. Any pics/diagrams that you may have to help me locate it?

Iirc there is a sensor that bolts directly to the head to give real time temps. I think Dave ( Incisor ) has them in the forum shop. Worth a PM anyway.

I use the auber with sender in the correct near thermostat location, works well, also have aftermarket vdo guage and sender plumbed into top of head as mentioned above, the head temp is approx 10deg above the thermostat reading
If you buy the auber gauge with sender it is a direct fit, no adaptors or taps needed

i sent auber an email and have not yet received reply. i wanted to put temp sender in the thermostat housing plug. they only seem to go up to 1/4npt threads though and the plug is a 1/2bsp. you can buy converters for these except i wanted to know if this brass to the stainless sensor thread would affect readings etc.

do they actually have a sensor with the 1/2 bsp? the other thing i noticed is their temp sensors have a big bit hanging out the back of them, i think to protect the wiring. this would stop the bonnet from closing if placed at the thermo bung. VDO had perfect senders, so another thing i asked auber is if they have similiar senders and if not, could their twin reading gauges be connected to the VDO sensors and still give a real reading.

if they ever reply to me i will post reply here.

redrovertdi - I would like a pic of how the sender looks in the original location. I like this keep this simple as possible. Any pics mate?

Fausto79 - yes the sender they have (look at my original post with the link to it) do come in the size and I have confirmed with Auber as per their reply to me:
"Our PT100 sensor for water/oil temperature has 1/8 NPT thread, it fits the female 1/8 NPT thread."

BTW: if anyone is interested to see, my home made dash pod that is still yet to be finished. Has tool box plastic body with 10mm sassafras timber. The right side gauge is the Auber, and the top red number is the EGT and the bottom green number will be the coolant temp.

thanks for that. but it's the 1/2 bsp connection i am wondering about as that is the thermostat housing plug size. same as the radiator.
