People will laugh at this but I use plumbers roof and gutter. I have done heaps of water pumps among other things with this.Quote:

WOW, I would have thought that the oils/grease would react with that type of silicon..... good to know u have had success in using it :)

Another non-automotive sealer that I and others have used is a polyurethane - Sikaflex 11fc, or Marine 291, the latter developed for curing in a moisture environment. After quite a few tries at the P gasket with persistent leaks, with new bolts, new metal gaskets, different kinds of sealants, even machind the cover a couple of thou - I eventually tried it. Very many Km's now, after even a water pump change and still no leak.
Another tip for doing this work cleanly which I just remembered - to get the P gasket mating surface as clean and dry as possible, drain some of the coolant from the drain hole on the left side of the block so the level is well below the coolant port. If you don't do this there will always be a persistent amount of coolant near the gasket area.
