Not sure about the 4 speed, but older 3 speed transmissions like BW 35 had a rear band. If this broke the tranny would work perfectly forward but have no reverse.
The good woman has had to call the RACQ as she has parked nose in at a shop & can't engage reverse. 1,2,3,D,P & N are all fine. It's being trucked home shortly so is there anything I should be looking at
Steve
Update: As above but can move H/L D/Lock lever in R position! Drives normally forward. I can't do too much as I did my right shoulder A.C. last week playing back yard cricket.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
1983 RR gone (wish I kept it)
1996 TDI ES.
2003 TD5 HSE
1987 Isuzu County
Many things can cause this. The 2 main causes are:
1: Low on ATF. Reverse is usually the first gear become non operational if the box is low on ATF.
2: Buildup of crud in the valve block. Usually occurs if the box has not been regualrly serviced and then had fresh ATF. The buildup of shellac on the seals etc from lack of servicing get stripped off with the fresh ATF and ends up in the valve block.
1 is an easy fix.
2 can be a nightmare!
D1 dropped down to M.R. this a.m. We got a call this P.M. saying that reverse was working.
Good old Murphy at his best
Thanks for the replies.

Make sure that it works when it is at operating temp.
I had a box that could engage reverse normally when cold but not when hot.
Outcome was a reco box.
