    V8 on gas . Rough idle. Coil temp issue?

    I am determined to get to the bottom of this erratic idle thing where , after 30 minutes of operating , the revs hunt from 750 down to 400 and back up and down again. You can just about set your watch by the 30 min thing. It runs fine ( maybe a small hint of a miss now and then ) up until 30 mins and then it starts to play up. Never stalls , just hunts. Irrespective of ambient temperature.

    I have read most of the posts and threads ( I think ) and am working through the issues raised one by one.

    One thing I noticed last night was that the coil seemed to feel very hot. It sits next to the LPG mixer ( I think ) which also runs hot. I put some insulation between the 2 hoping that would fix it . It didn't

    After a 50 min run to work this morning , I put the infrared thermometer on the coil and the read out was 91.0 C. Is that too hot?

    Also it has a note on it ' Use with electronic ignition ' This may sound dumb but I have a distributor. Isn't that instead of an electronic ignition?

    I reckon it's either ;

    A/ The wrong coil is fitted
    B/ The heat from the LPG mixer fries the coils and when hot they muck up ( As in it's already fried the coil and it doesn't cope when more heat is applied)


    Any thoughts on coil operating temperatures.

    I will put up a separate post about what else has been done but for now , I'm just focussing on the coil.

    You have electronic ignition, there is a magnetic pickup and an electronic module involved with your distributor. That is instead of a set of points and a condenser which is the old fashioned system. Your coil and/or ignition module may be failing, a new module would be my first point of call. The original module is very prone to poor performance, a locally supplied Bosch module is more reliable.

    Just out of interest , what temperature should the coil be running at?

    Who knows, It's not something I've ever measured. At a guess, perhaps 10-15C above ambient at most. Not enough to fry your finger unless it was 60C under the bonnet.
