No 3rd or 4th gear. 5 Speed manual.

    Has anyone come across this?
97 TDi. Have had it for a week.

I haven't had a real chance to look at it yet, but it felt sort of like linkages or selectors to me.
You just cant get it into 3rd or 4th slot. Its not like it goes in and doesn't do anything. It just wont go in.

I'm not even sure if it has external linkages or not. I'm hoping it does and that it is some simple split pin that has come out.
Am I being a bit optimistic? Ha ha.

    Cheers,

    Internal linkages.
The only simple failure (that I can think of) that can cause that is bias springs.

the little tab that blocks the bias springs to self center the shifter in the 3/4 position will have broken off and you're just not hitting the 3/4 gate correctly, If youre lucky.

if you're not the internal rod mounts have come adift or the engagement section of the 3/4 selector has snapped off. you might be able to get it to grab 3/4 while stationary but once the box is turning the syncros baulk function will prevent you from selecting.

    Thumbs down

    Thanks guys.
Unfortunately, the bias springs and the tab are in good order.
I lifted the top off the gear box and you just can't move the selector forward or back in the centre position.
    Darn!
I guess it must be "the internal rod mounts have come adrift or the engagement section of the 3/4 selector has snapped off" as Dave suggested.

I'll have to have a think about the plan from here as I originally only bought this one for parts for my other one.
Not sure if I want to spend the time on it pulling the gbox out.
