    ENGINE DESCRIPTIONS

    G'day All,

    Pardon my ignorance.................

I have a 'Tdi' diesel in my 98 Disco, and I understand the Td5 is the five cylinder engine. What is a 200Tdi and a 300Tdi?

    Thoroughly confused now

1998 will be a 300Tdi, which is a 2.5L 4cyl Direct Injection Turbo diesel (mechanically controlled injection - no electronics - for the AU version anyway).

The 200Tdi was very similar to the 300tdi.

    In summary:
    1989 - 1992 = 200 Tdi (2.5L 4cyl)
    1992/3 - 1998/9 = 300 Tdi
    1999 - 2004 = Td5 (2.5L 5cyl EFI) - note this engine was used for longer in defenders.

The 200Tdi was the last development of the first Rover diesel engine of 1957. The 300Tdi, which should be the one you have, was a complete redesign but with the same general description and size. This was followed by the Td5, the last Rover/Landrover designed engine to date. This turn was followed by Ford engines. I have seen claims that in a couple of years we will again see Landrover designed engines, but these will be completely new designs.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. My gut feeling was a 300Tdi. This is my first Land Rover diesel.

I don't know if i would go that far. I would call it a slight tweak of the 200 design. Given that a 300tdi head and pistons can be fitted to a 2.25D! Almost all parts can be interchanged between a 200 and 300 with a small amount of work.
